Gel Type Motorcycle Battery

If you’re looking for a maintenance-free battery, fortunately, there are tens of maintenance-free batteries available in the market. The reason for maintaining a bike battery is due to the fact that conventional batteries have wet cells filled with sulfuric acid. This distinction made the bike battery susceptible to many challenges and battery maintenance is one of them. However, with the advent of technology, having a maintenance-free battery is no big deal. Gel type battery is designed to be maintenance-free and improved compared to a typical wet cell battery. You may think that a gel-type battery differs from a lead-acid battery. However, it does differ, but not entirely.

A gel-type lead acid battery uses electrolyte but in a more contained manner. Unlike a typical lead-acid battery, a gel-type battery uses silica to convert lead-acid into Gel. The process of conversion makes lead-acid into the gel or putty-like substance which prevents spillage and improves battery capacity. Gel type batteries are comparatively improved then wet cell batteries, and also put up against AGM battery despite being expensive.

One of the significant benefits of having a gel-type battery is its ability to have a low self-discharge rate. The battery cell loses a bare maximum of 0.65-0.75 volts if left dormant for six months. The battery has a faster charging rate and it can be mounted in any orientation. A gel-type battery is widely used in all-terrain due to its ability to be spill-proof. Unlike a typical lead-acid battery, the battery doesn’t require a refill and lasts for a longer period of time. Having a lead-acid battery installed in your bike comes with several advantages. It also has longer cycles than the AGM battery and stores more power for a longer period of time.
